With a range of modern flat roof solutions, it can be difficult to understand if you’re making the right choice. There’s no shortage of cowboys in any trade and we wanted to put together these top tips to help people understand our trade a little bit better and avoid any unscrupulous traders who may be seeking your business!
Firstly, why all the buzz with EPDM and GRP?
There’s nothing wrong with trusty roofing felt, however, GRP (glass reinforced polyester AKA fibreglass) roofing has become one of the most popular roofing solutions in the UK with the realisation of its longevity following its application in various industries as far back as the 50’s and 60’s. This realisation has highlighted an assortment of modern roofing solutions that have huge advantages in comparison to traditional roofing solutions. These advantages include longevity, durability and even aesthetics.
So with a range of modern flat roof applications, a lot of them with complicated names such as polyurethane liquid or ethylene propylene diene monomer and all these acronyms floating about such as EPDM and GRP, it’s understandable if one finds it all a bit confusing!
So what are they and what do they do?
Fibreglass Roofing
Also known as GRP (glass reinforced polyester/plastic), this roofing solution is a seamless, long-lasting roofing solution and has emerged as the most popular flat roof solution in the UK in recent years. This is what a Fibreglass Roof looks like:
Lifespan – up to 30 years
EPDM
Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer is essentially a rubber roofing solution. EPDM has very similar properties and benefits to Fibreglass Roofing and although it has been more popular for commercial flat roofs, EPDM is becoming a more popular choice for residential properties too! Here is an example of an EPDM roof:
Lifespan – up to 30 years
Polyurethane Liquid Roofing
Another seamless, ingenious roofing solution and again has similar benefits to the aforementioned solutions. A liquid membrane is added to the roof and the end result is a stunning, durable flat roof.
Lifespan – up to 25 years
Most modern roofing applications are so reliable that reputable contractors are able to provide work guarantees through trade associations such as the Confederation of Roofing Contractors for example.
Make sure you do your homework when choosing a contractor! As much as we appreciate being chosen to fix disaster roofs, we’d much prefer people to come straight to us or even a reputable competitor first so that untrustworthy contractors are not able to destroy trust within our trade.
